Francis of Sales

Francis of Sales
(1567–1622)
Saint, Bishop, Order Founder and Devotional Writer.
Francis was born in Savoy of an aristocratic family. He studied law at the Universities of Paris and Padua, but in 1593 he was ordained and he became Provost of Geneva. He preached among the Calvinists of Chablais and he is said to have converted eight thousand back to Catholicism. His sermons were simple and straightforward and he used to declare, ‘Love alone will shake the walls of Geneva’. In 1599 he was appointed Bishop-Coadjutor of Geneva although he was not consecrated until 1603. With St jane frances de chantel, he founded the Order of the Visitation. This is an order of contemplative nuns who follow a rule drawn up by Francis and are dedicated to gentleness, humility and sisterly love. Francis was an important figure in the Counter-Reformation, but today he is particularly remembered for his two devotional classics, The Introduction to the Devout Life and The Treatise on the Love of God. Both have been reprinted many times. In 1923 he was named the patron saint of Catholic journalists.
